Chapter-1 Food: Where Does It Come From? 

                        Notes 

1) Functions of Food

- Provides energy

- Supplies nutrients for body growth

- Aids in body repair


2) Ingredients- Ingredients are the essential substances used in food preparation. 

Example: tea


Food Materials- The items from which we obtain our food are called food materials.


3) Sources of Food:

- Plant Sources

- Animal Sources


Plant Sources- All food items obtained from plants are called plant sources, such as fruits, vegetables, etc.


Animal Sources- Food items obtained from animals, such as milk, meat, eggs, cheese, etc.


4) Utilization of Plant Parts as Food:

Plants are the main source of food. The following parts of plants are used for consumption: stem, fruit, root, leaf, flower, etc.

Examples: The stem of onion is consumed. The fruit of mango is eaten. Spinach and fenugreek leaves are consumed. Carrots and radishes are eaten. Cauliflower is also consumed.


- Germination- The process of a small plant emerging from a seed is called germination.


- Sprouted- The white thread-like structure emerging from a seed is referred to as sprouted.


- Nectar- The juice collected by bees from flowers, or nectar, is stored in their hives, which later becomes honey and is used as food.


5)  Classification of Animals Based on Food Sources:


1) Herbivores- Animals that only eat plants. 

Examples: cow, buffalo, deer, etc.


2) Carnivores- Animals that only eat other animals. 

Examples: lion, fox, etc.


3) Omnivores- Animals that eat both plants and other animals.

Examples: humans, dogs, etc.

                            EXERCISE

Question 1-  Do you find that all living beings need the same kind of food? 

Answer- No, not all living beings require the same type of food because organisms can be Herbivores, Carnivorous or Omnivorous. Herbivores eat only plants and plant products. Carnivorous eat only meat, while Omnivorous ear both.

Question 2- Name five plants and indicate which part is used as food.  

Answer- The stem of the onion is eaten.  

                The fruit of the mango is eaten.  

                The leaves of spinach are eaten.  

                The root of the carrot is eaten.   

                The cauliflower is eaten.
