CHAPTER- 1 RESOURCES
NOTES
1. Resource– Anything that is used to fulfill needs.
2. Patent– The exclusive right over an idea or invention.
3. Technology– The application of the latest knowledge in performing a skill or creating an object.
4. Types of Resources– 1. Natural, 2.Man-made, 3. Human.
A) Natural Resources– Resources that are obtained from nature and used with little or no modification are called natural resources. Natural resources are of two types- Renewable and Non-renewable resources.
- Renewable Resources– Resources that are quickly renewed or replenished. Some of these are unlimited and remain unaffected by human activities, such as solar energy and wind energy.
- Non-renewable Resources– Resources that have a limited supply. Once depleted, they may take thousands of years to replenish. Examples – Coal, petroleum, and natural gas.
B) Man-made Resources– People use natural resources to create bridges, roads, machines, and vehicles, which are considered man-made resources. Technology is also a man-made resource.
C) Human Resource– Human resource refers to the population and the skills (both mental and physical) of people.
- Improving people's skills to enable them to create more resources is called Human Resource Development.
5. Resource Conservation– The careful use of resources and allowing them time for renewal is called resource conservation.
- Sustainable Development– Maintaining a balance between the need to use resources and conserving them for the future is called sustainable development.
Principles of Sustainable Development –
- Respect and care for all forms of life.
- Improve the quality of human life.
- Conserve the vitality and diversity of the Earth.
- Minimize the depletion of natural resources.
- Change individual behavior and practices toward the environment.
- Enable communities to take care of their environment.
6. Our planet and the future of the people living on it are linked to the protection and conservation of trees, plants, and ecosystems. Therefore, it is our duty to ensure that—
- The use of all renewable resources is sustainable.
- The diversity of life on Earth is preserved.
- The loss of natural environmental systems is minimized.
